Microsoft will make Windows 10 free for all Windows 8.1 and 7 users

Want to upgrade to Windows 10? Microsoft is offering it’s upcoming version of the Windows Operating System for free for existing Windows 8 and Windows 7 users (RIP Vista).

Windows Phone 8.1 users will also get a Windows 10 update sometime after release.

“Once a device is upgraded to Windows 10, we’ll be keeping it current for the supported lifetime of the device,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Operating Systems Group. “With Windows 10, we think of Windows as a service… The question ‘what version are you running’ will cease to make sense.”

Using a Windows RT device? Not to worry, according to the Q&A with Terry, You’ll be getting Windows 10 in some form as well.

Do note that the offer is only available for the first year of Windows 10’s availablity. This is similar to how Microsoft handled the Windows 8 release with a tempting offer to existing Windows 7 users to get the upgrade for just $15.00 (now sans the fee). It is unsure however how Microsoft will handle upgrades from Windows 7 or 8.1 after the first year offer ends.
