Pushing forward with the PlayStation Suite, Sony has unveiled a pair of PlayStation-certified Android 3.0 tablets: the 9.4″ S1 media tablet and dual-screen S2. Noting the names, they’re a welcome break from the weird naming convention around current tablets in the market.

The S1 sports a curved top much like the Notion Ink Adam and features dual cameras, powered by a Tegra 2 SoC and customized “Quick and Smooth” touch panel UI with “Swift” web browser. Aside from featuring Qriocity connectivity, the S1 will also serve as a giant remote for your Sony gadgets via the integrated infrared.

The clamshell, dual-screen S2 features 2 5.5-inch 1,024 x 480 pixel displays, Tegra 2 SoC, and single, front-facing camera. Sony takes advantage of the dual screens with a custom book-style UI layout for its e-reader app, email (keyboard on one display with your messages on the other), and ebook application.

Both the S1 and S2 are PlayStation Certified (meaning they’ll be able to play content from Sony’s PSN version for Android AKA the PlayStation Suite), support DLNA, and are WiFi and 3G/4G according to Sony. No word if a Wifi-only configuration is available as of press-time, or of prices or release dates.

Sony and Opera have teamed up to spice up your living room-bound web browsing experience by integrating the Opera Web Browser into Sony BRAVIA televisions and Blu-ray Disc (TM) players (no word if this includes the PS3).

Of course, having Opera on your device won’t replace the one on your PC/smartphone/laptop with the support of a mouse/trackpad/touchscreen, but it’s a positive development considering we spend most of our time online. Just think, no more handing over your PC just so your friends/relatives/etc need to check or update their facebook status. Now with that in mind, will it support flash (for farmville-y folks)? No word on that yet but we’ll update as soon as more info is out.

Tech-savvy users frowning at this development will no doubt see the downside immediately as the browser is usually controlled via an interfaces using a pointer (a mouse and/or a touch surface). This is negligent of course if Sony introduces a Wii like interface but it’s highly unlikely. Regardless of the downside, one can see the benefit of having a modern browser built-in instead of slogging throught a prorpietary market app (like Samsung).

Opera Software today announced to deliver its world-class browser on Sony BRAVIA televisions and Blu-ray Disc (TM) players. Opera aims to deliver more “lean-forward”, interactive components to connected home users by offering Opera’s solution to Sony’s state-of-the-art devices.

The Opera Devices Software Developer Kit (SDK) is the cross-platform, standards-based backbone of Opera for connected TVs and Blu-ray Disc players. As a robust, open platform for creating web-standards-based solutions, Opera Devices SDK forms the ideal foundation for developing full web browsers and user interfaces. Opera brings customization and ease of content distribution to global markets by enabling the delivery of web applications, widgets, full web browsing and emerging standards such as HTML5, HbbTV and OIPF.

Previously, consumers were required to have multiple devices to surf the Internet while watching television. As more connected home electronics devices arrive in living rooms, Internet use is changing. The Internet is becoming more closely connected with people’s everyday life, such as the ability to enjoy video on-demand services on television, exchange opinions with friends through social networks about the program they are watching, and buy online directly from their televisions the items seen on TV dramas.

“The Web as we know it is evolving, and we are committed to making it more accessible across diverse devices,” said Christen Krogh, Chief Development Officer, Opera Software. “Our ability to address key hybrid broadcast-broadband initiatives in numerous markets makes us a natural fit with Sony. By delivering both a global viewpoint and the necessary technology, we are able to stay on the cutting edge of the industry.”

With most of the major manufacturers like Toshiba, LG and Acer revealing their homespun tablet plans, everyone was looking forward to what Asus would be bringing onto the crowding table. Today Asus unveils those plans with no less than 4 upcoming tablets bearing the EEE namesake — the Eee Pad MeMO, the Eee Pad Transformer, the Eee Pad Slider and the Eee Slate EP121.

Just like their strategy with the netbook market, Asus is pinning hopes on each of these tablets to address a specific market niche.

The first smallest of the bunch is the Eee Pad MeMO. Sporting a 7.1-inch tablet with running Android 3.0, the device is aimed at users who would like to take down notes as it features a stylus to complement the multi-touch capacitive touchscreen. Despite it’s small size, the MeMO is beefy enough to output video in 1080p via a micro HDMI port.

Up next on the list is the Eee Pad Transformer. It sports Android 3.0, and is equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset to accelerate graphics. So why is it called a transformer? In reverse of the tablet/notebook hybrids of today, the Eee Pad Transformer doubles as a notebook (via optional keyboard dock). The Eee Pad Transformer features dual cameras: a 5-megapixel rear-facing unit, and 1.2-megapixel one meant for video chat. A mini HDMI port handles 1080p output.

Up next is the Eee Pad Slider, which is identical to the Transformer save for the fact that it’s keyboard is built-in (and as the name implies, it slides) which props up the display while in use. The Slider features a much more capable IPS screen (better brightness and color), as well as the option of an integrated 3G receiver.

The cream of the crop is the 12.1-inch Eee Slate EP121. Unlike the three tablets before it, the Slate EP121 is based on Windows 7 Home Premium and features better specifications, including a dual-core Core i5 CPU and up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM. The Slate EP121 will be available with either a 32 or 64GB SSD drive, and can be expanded using SD, SDHC or SDXC cards.

The Eee Slate will be the first to arrive to market and will start shipping this month. The Transformer arrives in April, followed by the Slider in May, and the MeMO in June. Prices will start at $999, $399, $499 and $499, respectively, and rise based on configuration upgrades.

For those interested in Android-based tablets, Acer has the 7″ and 10″ model for you, both sporting dual-core processors at 1GHz or greater, with Wi-Fi / Bluetooth, and ten-point multi-touch support on their 1280×800 screens. Additional features include HDMI outputs (so yes, these will play HD videos), a 5 megapixel rear camera, an “HD” front-facing camera for video calling and an internal Gyroscope for gaming.. or whatever use you find for a gyroscope.

Both Android tablets will ship with Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

Judging from the press-release, it seems the only difference between the 7″ model and 10″ model is the screensize.

As for the Windows 7 Tablet, it will run on the next-generation AMD platform (Brazos?), two 1.3MP cameras (one rear and one front-facing) for video conferencing, chat, etc and Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. Acer also touts it’s ultra thin design at just only 15 mm and less than 1kg. The Windows 7 tablet sports 10.1” high resolution display with multitouch support.

No word on pricing for all models as of yet but Acer assures us that their respective release dates are set for April 2011 for the Android models and February 2011 for the Windows 7 model.

Toshiba is starting to ship it’s Folio 100 tablets in several countries in Europe. The 10.1-inch slate is equipped with a 1024×600 capacitive multitouch display and powered by a dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip (SoC) that can pump 1080p video over the device’s mini HDMI port.

The Folio 100 comes with 16GB of internal flash storage expandable via an SD/MMC card reader. There’s also a (single) USB port, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and optional 3G connectivity, a 1.3- webcam, and an accelerometer. Toshiba boasts 7 hours of battery life for the Folio.

The catch? Well while the Folio runs the latest Android build, 2.2, it doesn’t ship with access to the official Android Market, just Toshiba’s very own Market Place. Bummer right? But I guess we can expect the usual suspects to give us what we need via cooked ROMs. The upside though is price. Germans will get the Wi-Fi model for €429 and €529 fort he 3G version. Italy gets these units at €399 and €499 and UK will get the Wi-Fi version for €329. No release date or pricing yet has been announced for the US and the rest of the world.
