Google has finally released it’s own brew of it’s URL shortening service to the public. Dubbed as the Google URL Shortener (goo.gl), it has been part of the Google Toolbar and Feedburner syndication service at launch, slowly making it’s way into other Google products like News, Blogger, Maps, Picasa Web Albums, and Moderator. Since people love the service so much, Google has finally released it for public consumption, claiming that goo.gl is the stablest, most secure, and fastest URL shortener on the web. Their words, not mine

Google touts the following features for those having second thoughts about switching from other popular url shortening services like bit.ly:

Stability: Near 100% uptime since our initial launch with continuous work behind the scenes to make goo.gl even stabler and more robust.

Security: Automatic spam detection based on the same type of filtering technology we use in Gmail.

Speed: Can’t get more self-explanatory that this.

To access goo.gl, just type it into your browser’s address bar.

If you have a google account, you can sign-in and use goo.gl and have it save your past shortened URLs. For those who love numbers and analytics, clicking the details link next to any of shortened URL will give you public, real-time analytics data, complete with traffic over time, top referrers, and visitor profile.

Goo.gl extensions are already available for Chrome and Firefox.

Flash is faster and much more efficient than HTML5 on mobile phones, that is if Web developer Christopher Black’s conclusions hold water.

Black says, “HTML5 will sit side by side with Flash. Gradient fonts, drop shadows, basic video and simple transitions are probably better suited for HTML5. When it comes to rendering display objects, animation and digital rights management for video, it would be silly not to use Flash.”

Black bases his statements on benchmark tests on both iOS and Android devices. The test suit plays the same animation on an iPod touch, an iPhone 4, and a Nexus One using HTML5, and then again using Flash 10.1 on the Nexus One. Here’s a video of the test:

As for the results?, They’re pretty self-explanatory. 22FPS for the iPhone 4G, 24FPS for the iPod Touch 4, 40FPS for the Nexus One running HTML5, and 57 FPS for the Nexus One running Flash. Note that while these tests do not represent real world performance, the benchmarks do give a clear indication of the performance of both Flash and HTML5 on both iOS and Android.

Microsoft has released the public BETA of Internet Explorer 9 and it is available for download to all Windows Vista and Windows 7 users.

IE9 packs a lot of enhancements and features such as HTML5 support, hardware acceleration graphics rendering using Direct2D, hardware accelerated text rendering using DirectWrite, hardware accelerated video rendering using Media Foundation, new streamlined and simplified address and navigation bar, faster JavaScript, better CSS3 compliant support, SVG1.1 standards support, embedded ICC v2 or v4 color profiles support via Windows Color System, and more.

Internet Explorer 9 (IE 9) sports a new high-speed engine called Chakra, greatly improving its performance. On the surface, IE9 is sporting a new novel, clear interface that may put off some due to the odd placement of the tabs.

If you’re looking to install IE9, you should take note the following items:

IE9 is not supported, and hence not available for Windows XP.

Installing IE9 on Windows Vista or Windows 7 will automatically replace and remove the existing installation of IE7 or IE8. IE9 and IE8 or IE7 does not co-exist alongside (yet, at least until hack available). So, for users who want to use IE7 or IE8, do not upgrade, or make available another PC or virtual machine just to run IE7 or IE8. However, uninstall IE9 should also automatically rollback to IE7 or IE8.

IE9 is available in both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions. However, 64-bit edition can only be installed on 64-bit operating system.

To download IE9 Beta, visit http://www.beautyoftheweb.com/.

Beauty of the Web website releases a mini version installer that requires Internet connection during installation.

Sony is set to launch a new service that’s meant to rival Apple’s iTunes. The announcement was made public Wednesday, September 1 at the IFA Technology Conference fair in Berlin, Germany .

Details are still currently scarce but Sony has announced that this subscription based music and video service is on track for a 2011 launch, with deals with the major record labels and studios all in the pipeline.

The cloud-based service will be available to users via Playstation 3 (PS3), Bravia televisions, Blu-Ray players, Sony branded laptops and desktops.

Why not PSP users when it has undoubtably more users that Sony’s latest generation console? Sony has failed to comment on the question but all fingers point to the rampant piracy on the portable gaming console as the cause.

“Via Qriocity, Sony will deliver a variety of digital entertainment content and services… including video, music, game applications and e-books over time,” said Sony Europe President Fujio Nishida.

The still unnamed service will offer music, and movies for a yet undiclosed subscription cost.

The transition from Yahoo’s own search engine to Microsoft’s latest search engine, Bing has begun.

Yahoo! announced the completed conversion today: its Web, image, and video search experiences on both desktop and mobile devices are now being served up by Bing (look at the footer to check). Note that this conversion currently only affects Yahoo’s English search results in the US and Canada. Microsoft says that other languages will follow “in the weeks and months ahead.”

Aside from replacing Yahoo!’s in-house search engine, the two companies are also working on the sponsored results in the sidebars. Yahoo’s search ad infrastructure will start replacing Microsoft’s AdCenter platform “later this fall,” but both companies have said they are willing to postpone the move till early next year as it may disrupt the holiday season. The revenue model for the Yahoo Search BOSS program still needs to be finalized, and many search-related tools for publishers will be released “in the months to come.”

An increase in YouTube‘s maximum video length is one of the site’s most requested features and today, Joshua Siegel, product manager for upload and video management, announces just that.
The limit for Youtube videos are now 15 minutes long.
In a blog post, Siegel writes that the ability to upload longer videos has been “without question, the number one requested feature” from users, The limit increase is said to be due to recent improvements to the site’s Content ID system.

“Now, all of the major U.S. movie studios, music labels and over 1,000 other global partners use Content ID to manage their content on YouTube,” he said. “Because of the success of these ongoing technological efforts, we are able to increase the upload limit today.”

To promote the new upload limit, YouTube is holding a contest called “15 Minutes of Fame.” If you’re interested in participating, just create a video showing the world what would you want to communicate. What will be the enduring stamp you’ve left on us all?

The deadline for the “15 Minutes of Fame” contest is August 4. Just be sure to tag it “yt15minutes” and the winners will have their videos featured on the YouTube homepage at some point in the future.

With Firefox 4 still in Alpha testing, Mozilla is looking to introduce a new feature called Tab Candy. Mozilla’s Aza Raskin says that it’s still early in testing mode but you can get it with the latest nightly build of Firefox 4.

The embedded video gives a full overview of Tab Candy:

Tab Candy gives Firefox something like Apple’s Expose feature mixed with their Spaces feature. For those who don’t use a Mac, it’s the OS’s feature that allows you to zoom out and get a bird’s-eye-view of all your windows (in Tab Candy’s case it’s tabs) that are open which you can interact with by clicking, dragging, etc.

While Tab Candy is an interesting feature, one has to wonder how much resources this will require for the final build. Still, it’s an interesting take on tabbing. One that I hope won’t be killed by an errant lawsuit.

You can get Firefox 4 with Tab Candy from a very early nightly right here.

Important: This is still in alpha so expect bugs, resource hogging, unstability, etc.
