In stark contrast to Vista, (which lot of people hated, some for technical reasons, others for no other reason than jumping on the hate machine) Windows 7 is flourishing in sales for both personal use and the enterprise. While this number sports a great number of adoption from people replacing computers and laptops on their usual upgrade cycles (and those purchasing their first units), most of the current user-base are shifters from XP, Vista and other non-Windows OS.

For added incentive for the enterprise market, Redmond claims that deploying Windows 7 will allow businesses to save around $140 per PC per year. Having more companies migrating off XP means less users stuck on Internet Explorer 6—undeniably a boon for web developers the world over.

Windows 7 passed XP in adoption rates in some markets.

If you’re a Windows user and haven’t installed/upgraded Windows 7, tell us why in the comments.

According to the latest numbers crunched by pingdom, people are finally migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7. That is, for the U.S. market at least.

The data comes from aggregated visits to over 3 million websites (so for you survey OCDs out there, yes, there’s a huge enough sample group). Since it’s launch, usage of Windows 7 has been on a steep rise, indicating how much right Microsoft did with Windows 7. In comparison, Vista never even got close to XP’s market share :/ Poor Vista.

If you take the numbers from Steam:

Yep. Windows 7 is still up top.

Microsoft celebrates the first birthday of it’s flagship operating system with news that Windows 7 has sold more than 240 million licenses for it’s first year in the market!

Not a lot you say? Compared to XP and Vista’s first year of sales.

XP sold just about 89 million licenses during its first year in the market while Vista managed to sell over 100 million licenses. A huge leap isn’t it, but it shouldn’t be a surprise considering more and more users are increasingly please with Windows 7. Even IT professionals are impressed, with a whole lot of them recommending 7 over XP within the first five months of release.

Here’s a few more interesting numbers that Microsoft has shared:

Has a customer satisfaction rate of 94%

Is on more than 1.2 billion Windows PCs worldwide

Is on 93 percent of new consumer PCs, as of September

Has over 17 percent of the global operating system share

Has inspired nearly 90 percent of companies to upgrade or start upgrading to the new OS

On average, can save companies US$140 per PC per year, and a 131 percent return on investment in the first year

Apples to Apples? Huh?

For some reason, Dell’s marketing thinks it’s own offerings are comparable and superior to the MacBook equivalents.

Just after a month of topping 150 million in licenses, Microsoft and no doubt Steve Ballmer, is happy to report once again that Windows 7 is selling quite well, adding another 25 million in sales. That’s 175 million copies of their currently flagship OS.

“This continues our record breaking pace of more than 7 copies sold per second. And as of today – Windows 7 is now running on more than 16% of all PCs worldwide,” Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft community manager, blogged. “It’s exciting to see this kind of response from customers who have helped make Windows 7 the fastest selling operating system in history.”

Part of the reason for Microsoft’s continuous growth with regards to 7 is that they’ve been dropping support for their “legacy” operating systems. Sure a lot of us folks wouldn’t mind not getting support for our installation of XP Service Pack 2 but those in the corporate field, it’s a matter of life and death.

On that note, have you upgraded to Windows 7 yet?

Microsoft has made the BETA release of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 publicly available to TechNet, BizSpark and MSDN subscribers.

If you’re eager on testing the latest build for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, head to the MSDN download page. Otherwise (if you’re a consumer), just wait for the final version.

No new features will be brought to Windows 7 in the upcoming service pack, just bug fixes and general improvements. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, on the other hand, brings Virtual Desktop Infrastructure enhancements that enable hardware-accelerated 3D graphics and video playback over a Remote Desktop Connection.

Microsoft has announced that it has now sold over 150 million Windows 7 licenses since the product first launched in October 2009, reiterated that this makes it’s current flagship OS as the fastest-selling operating system in history. Doing the math, Windows 7 customers are snatching up 7 copies every second.

Hat’s off to Microsoft and their marketing team. Yes the marketing team, for giving us the Windows 7 Whopper and Nanami-chan And of course, the best version of Windows yet.

Managing files between multiple Windows Explorer windows is usually a hassle without a proper software to handle this task. Sure, it’s easy transferring a file or a set of files from one folder to another but what if you need to distribute them along multiple folders with different file structures? That’s quite a task especially since you have to either navigate to each location manually with your current window OR open a new Windows Explorer windows just for it. For tech-savvy users like you, I’m sure you’re looking for something to make this taxing task somewhat simpler. Windows Double Explorer offers a free and better solution than just sticking with plain old Windows Explorer.

Windows Double Explorer (WDE for short) opens two panes, each with it’s own Windows Explorer window where users can browse and navigate files, folders, documents, etc. Two panes aren’t enough for you? Just add more tabs until you get your fill . I haven’t found out what the limit is on the number of tabs WDE can handle but I’m pretty certain it’s a lot.

Now you might be wondering, what good does using Windows’ very own Explorer application instead of using it’s own dedicated file navigation system. By using Windows Explorer, you get access to all the nifty additions that Windows 7 has added like Libraries, Favorites, etc. If you want something a bit more toned down and back to basics, you may want to look at the free version of Xplorer2 (Xplorer lite). My only qualm about WDE is that auxiliary mouse buttons (button 4 and 5 on my A4tech laser mouse) don’t work. They work gracefully with an ordinary Windows Explorer window for moving back and forth (button 4 is usually mapped to back and button 5 to forward) the directories you’re browsing and I kinda miss it while using WDE. I’m hoping it’ll be addressed with future releases .

Windows Double Explorer is freeware and can be downloaded via the developer’s a href=”http://wde.codeplex.com/”>site. The current build as of publishing this post is v0.3.7
Do note that this application ONLY works with Windows 7

In a weeks time, computers that have the Release Candidate (build 7100) of Windows 7 installed will begin to experience a bi-hourly (every two hours) recurring shutdown. That means a not so subtle prompt of having your PC shutting down as a reminder to fork up some cash for the retail version or saddle up back to Microsoft’s legacy OS, Windows XP.

If you’re asking why Microsoft would do such a thing is because as part of the agreement for allowing you to use the Release Candidate for free up until June 1. If up until then you still haven’t switched OS (which is a feat that calls for applause considering your computer will start to forcibly shut down starting May 1), according to Ars Technica, it will trigger a “non-genuine experience.” What’s this non-genuine experience? Aside from the scheduled shut downs, your wallpaper will be replaced with a plain backdrop with a message “This copy of Windows is not genuine” plastered at the lower right corner of the desktop. Looks fancy doesn’t it? /sarc

If you want to retain your copy of Windows 7 there’s two things you can do, get it cheap (via MSDNAA, your company’s MSDN/Bizspark subscription, your friend?) or locate and install a copy of Windows 7 RTM.
