The lowest end of the 13″ MBPR line now comes with  2.6 Intel Core i5 chip and 8GB of memory from the original 2.4GHz Core i5 processor, and 4GB of memory while it’s siblings sport a larger SSD (with the top end unit shipping with a slightly faster processor).  The 15″ MBPR line now comes with the latest i5 and i7 processors from Intel along side a generous offering of 16GB of RAM.  No change on the GPU front however.

Microsoft buys Nokia for $7.2 billion http://www.techiexplorer.com/2013/09/microsoft-buys-nokia-for-7-2-billion.html http://www.techiexplorer.com/2013/09/microsoft-buys-nokia-for-7-2-billion.html#comments Tue, 03 Sep 2013 06:30:45 +0000 http://www.techiexplorer.com/?p=985 Formerly just one of the major players in the Windows Phone share of the mobile industry, Nokia is now set to be the cornerstone of Microsoft’s mobile initiative as Redmon announced it’s plans to buy the Finland-based manufacturer.  The deal is set to close in the first quarter of 2014 with payments going broken down into 3.79 billion Euros for Nokia’s business, plus another 1.65 billion Euros for its portfolio of patents for a total of 5.44 billion euros ($7.2 billion).

Around 32,000 employees are set to transfer from Nokia to Microsoft — the biggest transition since Nokia announced it’s plans to drop the Symbian operating system off it’s mobile phone family – including 18,300 that are “directly involved in manufacturing.”

As part of the agreement for the acquisition, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop will step down and take the helm of Microsoft’s Devices team while a previous chairman of the company’s Board of Directorys, Risto Siilasmaa was named Nokia’s Interim CEO.

On Firefox, the string renders fine

Screen-Shot-2013-08-29-at-1.14.33-PM

Safari instantly crashes

Screen Shot 2013-08-30 at 12.44.42 PM

And Chrome has the tab loading the page in question crash

Screen Shot 2013-08-30 at 12.44.47 PM

The actual page can be seen here.

The bug seems to originate from Apple’s CoreText API which means any application using it is vulnerable.  According to the Russian website Habrahabr.ru , Apple has been aware of this vulnerability for six months and has yet to patch the exploit in any currently available operating system build.  The author notes however that this is no longer an issue with the current beta versions of iOS 7 and OSX 10.9.

The Samsung-built Nexus 10 was  first introduced back in October 2012.  Unlike the Nexus 7 which has had a continuous stream of rumors of an imminent update, the news of n Nexus 10 update seems sparse — at least until now.  A 2013 model should help push the 10-inch Nexus model if at least to help alleviate the hardware issues that currently plague the first generation of the device.

The company also apologized for the delay of it’s Android 4.1 roll out on it’s 2012 line of Xperia devices.

2nd generation Nexus 7 is official, priced at $229 http://www.techiexplorer.com/2013/07/2nd-generation-nexus-7-is-official-priced-at-229.html http://www.techiexplorer.com/2013/07/2nd-generation-nexus-7-is-official-priced-at-229.html#comments Wed, 24 Jul 2013 23:43:30 +0000 http://www.techiexplorer.com/?p=967 Google has unveiled the highly anticipated hardware refresh for it’s mildly successful Nexus 7 tablet. The all new 7-inch tablet sports a much more powerful a quad-core Snapdragon CPU, 2GB RAM, 1920 x 1200 display and the latest version of Android JellyBean, Android 4.3.

nexus7

A few of the major complaints about the Nexus 7 is the somewhat sluggish Tegra 3 processor and the anemic display resolution. By bumping up both specs and throwing in a generous amount of RAM, the Nexus 7 2.0 should run circles around it’s previous iteration. Now sporting a 323 ppi display, the 1920 x 1200 resolution should make reading quite a bit more pleasurable on the device. If you’re worried that the larger screen resolution and more powerful SoC will drain the battery fret not, Google assured that the new Nexus 7 features 9 hours of battery life for HD video playback, and 10 hours while surfing the web.

Google – Asus Nexus 7 2.0 [2013 model] specs:
7-inch IPS LCD display @ 1200×1920 pixels, 323ppi
Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5GHz quad-core CPU
Adreno 320 Graphics
2GB RAM
16GB and 32GB internal memory
5MP rear-facing camera, no flash
1.3MP front-facing camera
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC
Android 4.3 Jellybean

One of the prime reasons for the Nexus 7 selling so fast is the price and the new model doesn’t disappoint — the original 16GB launched at $229 then dropped to $199 when the 8GB version was struck off the market. The 16GB WiFi-only variant will fetch $229 and the 32GB model for $269 – both models will be available on the Google Play Store starting next Tuesday. Other countries, including the UK, Germany, Japan, Canada, Spain, France, Australia, and South Korea will get the tablet in the coming weeks.

For those looking for a bit more in terms of connectivity, there will also be an LTE equipped variant of the 32GB model and it will be available for $349 in the near future.

Android 4.3, still codenamed JellyBean brings a few more niceties and features to the OS.

android 4.3

With Android 4.2 adding support for multi-user support, Android 4.3 brings in user restriction, allowing you to create restricted profiles that allows you to restrict app content at a user level. This is similar to Microsoft’s Kid’s Corner in Windows Phone which not only prevents unauthorized apps from being launched but also restricts purchasing or event accessing content the user deems inappropriate.

The first JellyBean release included Project Butter which aims to solve the stuttering of Android UIs, with Android 4.3 Google has included OpenGL ES 3.0. Aside from smoothing out animations, it gives developers additional options for eyecandy for apps and games. Google’s demo of the new OpenGL promises to capitalize the multicore processors already available on current Android devices — provided they support OpenGL ES 3.0.

Bluetooth Smart, aka Bluetooth Low Energy, also makes a debut:

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will be rolled out to the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, first-gen Nexus 7, and the Galaxy Nexus starting today, with the HTC One and Galaxy S4 Google Editions getting it “very soon” as well.
